The Cardinal Secretary of State comments on the situation in Syria and promotes dialogue at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, is currently in Milan, Italy, where he is attending an event at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and participating in the awarding of the Al Issa Research Award for Arab-Islamic Studies. Amidst the activities, the Cardinal took the time to comment on the recent developments in Syria, expressing concern over the rapid fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and highlighting the importance of respect, dialogue, and harmony in the country’s future.

In an interview with journalists, Cardinal Parolin emphasized the need for a system in Syria that respects all individuals, especially following the sudden collapse of President Assad’s government. He noted that the current situation presents an opportunity to strengthen relationships with the Muslim world and build bridges for dialogue.

During his visit to Milan, Cardinal Parolin is participating in the conference at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, where the Al Issa Research Award for Arab-Islamic Studies is being presented. This award, sponsored by the Secretary General of the Muslim World League, aims to support young researchers focusing on Arab-Islamic culture.

    Dialogue and Diplomacy

While the Holy See does not have formal roles in international negotiations, Cardinal Parolin reaffirmed the Vatican’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy. He highlighted the ongoing efforts in conflict areas like Ukraine and the Middle East, where the Holy See works to promote dialogue, ceasefire agreements, and humanitarian aid.

    Strengthening Bridges

Cardinal Parolin stressed the importance of dialogue in addressing global challenges and fostering collaboration. The event at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore serves as a platform to enhance understanding between different religious cultures and promote mutual cooperation. The Cardinal commended the university for leading initiatives that contribute to knowledge and collaboration in contemporary society.

    Upcoming Engagements

During his time in Milan, Cardinal Parolin will also celebrate Mass in preparation for Christmas and participate in a book presentation on “For a New Economy,” which explores ethical and cooperative models for economic development. The event will feature contributions from prominent figures, including Archbishop Mario Delpini and President-emeritus of the Accademia dei Lincei, Alberto Quadrio Curzio.

As Cardinal Parolin continues his engagements in Milan, his commitment to promoting dialogue, respect, and collaboration remains at the forefront of his mission.
