As the world watches, the United Nations has sounded the alarm on the dire situation in Gaza, where humanitarian aid has been largely blocked for the past 66 days.
An estimated 75,000 Palestinians are currently living without access to essential resources such as food, water, electricity, and healthcare. Among them, approximately 26,000 individuals are struggling with injuries sustained over the past year, facing a lack of proper medical care and rehabilitation services.
Since October 2023, an alarming 58% of WHO-led missions inside Gaza have faced obstacles, hindering critical medical assistance for those in need. This has made the already challenging task of evacuating patients requiring specialized care outside the enclave even more difficult.
UN humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza, Sigrid Kagg, highlighted the gravity of the situation, describing it as “utterly devastating” for civilians in the region.
With only four UN-supported bakeries operational across the Gaza Strip, all located in Gaza City, the access to basic necessities remains severely limited. The United Nations estimates that a staggering US$6.6 billion is needed to address the pressing humanitarian needs of the people in Gaza and the West Bank.
Tragically, amidst this crisis, at least 22 individuals lost their lives due to repeated Israeli airstrikes on the town of Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza. The Kamal Adwan Hospital confirmed the casualties, while the IDF has yet to comment on the attack.
The situation in Gaza is a stark reminder of the urgent need for international support and action to alleviate the suffering of civilians caught in the midst of conflict and humanitarian crisis.
