As Giuseppe Pignatone prepares to retire from his role as the President of the Tribunal of Vatican City State, Pope Francis met with him to express gratitude for his years of service.
Giuseppe Pignatone, who has been the President of the Vatican Tribunal since 2019, has had a distinguished career as a prosecutor in various Italian jurisdictions.
The Holy See Press Office announced on Wednesday that Pope Francis accepted Pignatone’s resignation as he reached the age of 75, the age limit set for members of the Vatican judiciary.
During his meeting with Pope Francis, Pignatone was thanked for his service, with his resignation set to take effect on December 31, 2024.
Pignatone, who previously served as the prosecutor of Rome from 2012 to 2019, was appointed by Pope Francis to lead the Tribunal responsible for matters concerning the life of Vatican City State.
Throughout his tenure, Pignatone has been involved in various hearings, including the trial on the management of the Holy See’s funds and the case concerning the funds of the Sistine Chapel Choir, which recently concluded.
Born in Caltanissetta, Italy, Pignatone graduated in Law from the University of Palermo in 1971. He has served as a magistrate and prosecutor in various cities before his appointment to the Vatican Tribunal.
