Exploring the Theological Contributions of Pope Benedict XVI

Following the passing of Pope Benedict XVI (1927-2022), a posthumous publication of his book What is Christianity. A spiritual testament (La Esfera de los libros, 2023, Kindle edition) provided insight into his theological reflections after the election of Pope Francis. In this book, Pope Benedict XVI delves into various topics such as religions, fundamental elements of Christianity, dialogue with the Jews, the Church, priesthood, Eucharist, natural law, Veritatis Splendor, and the concept of evil actions. It serves as a thought-provoking guide for those on a spiritual journey in the modern era.

Pope Benedict XVI emphasizes the importance of expanding rationality beyond mere technical and pragmatic aspects to encompass the full reality of human existence. He believes that Christianity is not just a religion but an extension of philosophical thought, rooted in the search for truth. This rational foundation of religion has been overlooked in contemporary times, where Christianity is often perceived as just one among many religions. The Christian message, according to Pope Benedict XVI, holds significant value in cultural dialogues due to its rational underpinnings that address fundamental human issues.

In the context of the Jubilee of hope in 2025, Pope Benedict XVI highlights the theme of hope throughout the Old Testament. He emphasizes the pilgrimage-like nature of the Church’s journey, likening it to the Israelites’ forty years in the desert. This perspective reframes the Church’s role as a continuous striving towards goodness amidst adversities, rooted in theological hope that transcends earthly challenges.

Reflecting on the priesthood, Pope Benedict XVI underscores the priest’s dual role of being in the presence of the Lord and serving Him. He elaborates on the priest’s duty to lead a life centered on the Eucharist and to serve God and humanity through worship and proclamation of the Word. The priest’s ultimate service lies in embodying Christ’s selfless sacrifice and sanctifying truth in their actions.

Pope Benedict XVI’s teachings emphasize the transformative power of truth and love, embodied in God. He warns against the loss of meaning and moral compass when denying the existence of a divine intelligence and love at the core of human existence. Embracing truth as a guiding path leads to a deeper understanding of life’s transcendent purpose and the essence of humanity.
