“Today we come together, not as individuals, but as a community deeply committed to the formation of young people in Asia, walking alongside them as they navigate life, faith, and purpose,” shared IFFAsia Director Florence Alexius during the opening program.
The dialogue, which took place from February 9 to 11 in Tagaytay City, Philippines, saw 57 representatives actively participating in discussions and brainstorming sessions.
Ms. Alexius emphasized the importance of exploring ways to be a Synodal Church for young people in their everyday lives and how institutions and organizations can support and engage the present generation for the benefit of the local Church and communities in Asia.
The guiding objective of the program was to encourage all participants to see themselves as collaborators in this journey towards empowering and nurturing the youth.
Guided by the principles of Synodality, the dialogue process focused on fostering a sense of togetherness, promoting active listening, discernment, and participation.
IFFAsia, founded by laity from Malaysia and the Philippines within the Catholic lay association Fondacio, serves as a discipleship and mission school for young adults and laypeople in Asia. It aims to equip young laypersons with the necessary skills for social and pastoral work.
Archbishop Rex Andrew Alarcon of Caceres, chairperson of IFFAsia, expressed his excitement about the dialogue, calling it one of the initial steps towards implementing the Synodal intent. He encouraged participants to embrace Synodality and collaboration in their mission to support youth formation across Asia.
During discussions on youth in conflict areas, Archbishop Alarcon emphasized the importance of countering the prevailing culture of fear with hope, courage, and love.
Participants are expected to draft a final statement outlining concrete actions for cooperation and collaboration to address the challenges of youth formation in Asia.
