Welcome to the weekly General Audience where Pope Francis continues his insightful catechetical series on “Jesus our Hope”. Today, the focus is on the miraculous birth of Jesus in a humble stable in Bethlehem, inviting us to open our hearts to wonder and joyful proclamation.
By Christopher Wells
Delving into the theme of “Jesus our Hope,” Pope Francis sheds light on the profound humility of God, who chose to enter the world at a specific time and place, in the most modest of circumstances.
Before His birth, Jesus began His journey as our eternal companion, traveling in Mary’s womb to meet Elizabeth, and later journeying with Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem for the census.
Witnesses of the Extraordinary
In his teaching, Pope Francis emphasizes the unprecedented nature of Christ’s birth – a king born not in a grand palace, but in a humble stable among animals. The first to witness this divine event were the shepherds, individuals of humble means and societal status.
Despite their lowly position, the shepherds symbolize the occupation through which God reveals Himself to His people. They are chosen as the initial recipients of the incredible news: “A Saviour has been born for you, who is Messiah and Lord.”
Finding Jesus lying in a manger, the shepherds are filled with wonder, praise, and joy, as they realize the Messiah’s humble dwelling place. This revelation leads them to exalt and proclaim the good news.
As highlighted in his Apostolic Letter, Admirabile signum, Pope Francis underscores that it is the meek and impoverished who welcome the Incarnation with open hearts.
A Call to Wonder and Praise
The Holy Father encourages us to emulate the shepherds’ capacity for wonder and praise before God, cherishing the gifts and responsibilities entrusted to us. He urges us to recognize the extraordinary strength within the vulnerable Child God, who seeks to renew the world and instill hope in humanity.
