Donald Trump is once again attacking Volodymyr Zelensky as he prepares to sign a $500 billion agreement with Ukraine for the exploitation of rare earth minerals and denies the news regarding a trip to Moscow to meet Vladimir Putin on May 9th. The President of the United States, in the Oval Office of the White House, responds to reporters’ questions about the war between Ukraine and Russia: “I want to see a ceasefire and I want there to be an agreement,” he says. In recent days, Trump has called Zelensky a “dictator without elections.” In a radio interview, he deemed the Ukrainian president unnecessary in negotiations: “He has no cards to play, he’s had 3 years and hasn’t achieved anything.” Now, faced with the press’s questions, his tone changes only slightly. “I believe President Putin and President Zelensky need to get along because we want to stop the killing of millions of people. Thousands of soldiers are being killed every week. I want to see a ceasefire and I want there to be an agreement,” he says, introducing the topic that currently represents an absolute priority. The United States is about to sign an agreement that will allow the exploitation of Ukrainian mineral resources. For Trump, this is a fundamental issue if it’s true, as Axios reports, that the President of the United States has also considered cutting military aid to Kiev in case of a deadlock. “This war is not so much about the United States as it is about Europe. We have spent three times as much as Europe. We will sign an agreement” with the Ukrainians “or there will be problems with them, we will sign an agreement because we are spending a fortune on a very distant country, which is spending its blood. Europe lends the money, we lose our money, and we should be treated like Europe.” The agreement on rare earth minerals – the Ukrainian deposits crucial for numerous industrial sectors – would allow the US to rebalance its accounts: “We hope to soon sign an agreement that will allow us to regain $400 or $500 billion after giving them $300 billion. We are close to the agreement, they want it. Biden should have signed it, but he didn’t know what he was doing…,” says Trump. In a radio interview with Fox a few hours earlier, Trump describes the talks with Putin as “excellent.” In the Oval Office, the President of the United States dodges the direct question ‘Is Putin a dictator?’. The rumor about a trip to Moscow on May 9th for the parade that celebrates the annual victory of the Soviet Union over the Third Reich in World War II emerges: “I’m not going.” —international/foreignwebinfo@adnkronos.com (Web Info)
