Celebrating Holy Mass for the Jubilee of Deacons
At the Mass for the Jubilee of Deacons, Archbishop Rino Fisichella read Pope Francis’s homily, encouraging deacons to be apostles of forgiveness, selfless servants, and builders of communion. The Pope, undergoing treatment for double pneumonia at Gemelli Hospital, asked for prayers.
On Sunday, Archbishop Rino Fisichella celebrated Mass for the Jubilee of Deacons, focusing on the theme of gratuity, essential for the diaconate and all Christians in their faith journey. The Mass took place as Pope Francis remained hospitalized.
“In the Eucharistic celebration, we feel Pope Francis close to us, despite his hospitalization, urging us to pray fervently for him during this time of trial and illness,” said Archbishop Fisichella.
Forgiveness
Reflecting on the readings of the day, Pope Francis spoke about the importance of forgiveness as a key aspect of the Christian vocation. He emphasized the need to forgive, rebuild relationships, and not withhold love from those who hurt us, as a world without forgiveness is a world without hope.
Selfless Service
Pope Francis highlighted the selfless service of deacons, who are called to serve joyfully and humbly without seeking recognition. He urged them to be bridges between the altar and the street, linking the Eucharist to people’s daily lives.
Communion
The Pope emphasized the importance of communion, nurtured by giving freely without expecting anything in return. Deacons express communion by embracing the poor and making others feel valued and included through their actions, not just words.
Humility
Addressing those preparing for priesthood, Pope Francis urged them to see ordination as a descent into humility, serving others rather than seeking a higher status. He emphasized the importance of humility in priesthood.
