Fourth Visit of the Statue since 1984
This will be the fourth time the statue has left Fatima to come to Rome. Previous visits occurred in 1984, 2000, and 2013, with each visit holding special significance in the hearts of believers. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, expressed the importance of the statue’s presence, allowing everyone to feel the closeness of the Virgin Mary.
Father Carlos Cabecinhas, Rector of the Sanctuary of Fatima, emphasized the exceptional nature of the statue’s travels and its significance during this Jubilee period. The statue, created by Portuguese artist José Ferreira Thedim in 1920, usually resides in the Chapel of the Apparitions at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima.
A Pilgrim of Hope
Measuring 104 cm tall and carved from Brazilian cedar, the statue of Our Lady of Fatima holds a special place in the hearts of believers. It was solemnly crowned on May 13, 1946, and embedded with the bullet that struck Pope John Paul II during an assassination attempt in St. Peter’s Square on May 13, 1981.
