Pope Francis’ condition continues to improve as he receives treatment for a complex respiratory infection at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The Vatican announced Thursday morning that the 88-year-old pontiff slept well overnight and is responding well to oxygen therapy and physiotherapy for his respiratory passages.
Although there are signs of improvement, Vatican officials remain cautious about the prognosis as the pope’s hospitalization enters its 13th day.
Pope’s Message of Consolation
The Vatican shared a heartfelt letter from Pope Francis to a grieving mother before his hospitalization. In the letter, set to be published in the magazine Piazza San Pietro, the Pope addressed Cinzia, a mother who lost her 21-year-old son, Fabrizio. He wrote, “Jesus, who weeps with us, will sow in our hearts all the answers we seek.”
Prayer vigils for the pontiff’s recovery are ongoing. The Secretariat of State of the Holy See announced that a rosary will be prayed this evening at 9 p.m. in St. Peter’s Square.
