Welcome to the Royal Speech in Rome

King Charles praises ‘deep friendship’ between UK and Italy

King Charles III Makes History in Italy

King Charles III made history by becoming the first British monarch to address both houses of the Italian parliament during his state visit to Rome with Queen Camilla. The historic speech highlighted the deep friendship between the UK and Italy.

Describing it as “a great honour,” King Charles emphasized the importance of reaffirming the strong bond between the two nations. He expressed his personal connection to Italy, stating that the country holds a special place in his heart as well as that of the Queen.

In a light-hearted moment, the king joked about his Italian language skills, hoping that he hadn’t butchered the language of Dante too much to be invited back to Italy. He also noted the significance of returning to Italy on their 20th wedding anniversary since their coronation.

Highlighting the cultural ties between the UK and Italy, King Charles mentioned Shakespeare’s works set in Italy and the large Italian community in London. He also touched upon the military cooperation and shared values between both nations, paying tribute to historical figures who fought for justice.

The royal visit included various events, from a joint flypast over Rome to visits to historical sites like the Colosseum and Roman Forum. The final day of the visit will commemorate the liberation of Ravenna and pay homage to literary icons like Dante and Lord Byron.

Overall, the state visit underscores the enduring relationship between the UK and Italy, reflecting their shared history, values, and culture.
