Welcome to a reflection on the fifth Novemdiales Mass in memory of Pope Francis, presided over by Cardinal Sandri. Join us as we delve into Pope Francis’ legacy of humble service and the lasting vision he leaves for the future of the Church.
By Francesca Merlo
Cardinal Leonardo Sandri began the Mass by proclaiming “Christ is Risen”, marking a pivotal moment between the end of Pope Francis’ papacy and the dawn of a new era. As the world awaits the announcement of a new Pope, Cardinal Sandri emphasized the significance of this transition in light of the Paschal experience of Christ.
United in Prayer and Remembrance
The Novendiales Mass serves as a time for the Church to unite in prayer, remembrance, and reaffirmation of faith in the Resurrection. Cardinals from around the globe gather not only as collaborators of the Pope, but also as bearers of prayers from every corner of the earth. From Tonga to Mongolia, Tehran to Jerusalem, and beyond, the Church stands in solidarity.
Quoting Pope Francis, Cardinal Sandri emphasized the importance of service as the essence of true leadership. Pope Francis’ commitment to serving the marginalized echoes the ancient title “Servant of the Servants of God,” embracing the core mission of the Church.
Scriptural Inspiration for a New Chapter
Reflecting on the Acts of the Apostles, Cardinal Sandri highlighted Peter’s speech at Pentecost as a symbol of fulfillment and new beginnings. Just as Pentecost marked the birth of the Church, today’s Church anticipates a new chapter.
Quoting the prophet Joel, Cardinal Sandri echoed Pope Francis’ emphasis on intergenerational connection. The unity between old and young generations is essential for a vibrant future.
A Vision for Tomorrow
In closing, Cardinal Sandri pointed to Pope Francis’ vision for the future of the Church, as outlined in the 2025 Jubilee Bull. Looking ahead to the 2033 celebration of 2000 years since the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, Pope Francis invites all Christians to embark on a spiritual pilgrimage to the Holy Land, proclaiming the eternal truth: “The Lord is truly risen and has appeared to Simon!”
