Breaking News: National Security Advisor Mike Waltz to Step Down Amid Chatgate Scandal
According to reports from US media outlets, President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, will be leaving his position following the recent chatgate scandal. Waltz and his deputy, Alex Wong, were both reportedly ready to resign, as per CBS News. Fox News has stated that Trump is expected to release a statement soon, while the White House has not issued any immediate comments.
Waltz, a former member of the US Congress, would be the first high-ranking official to depart from the Trump administration during the tycoon’s second term. A White House official has neither confirmed nor denied the reports, stating that they “do not want to preempt any announcement.” The National Security Advisor has been under pressure since the editor of The Atlantic Magazine revealed in March that Waltz had mistakenly added him to a Signal chat discussing attacks against the Houthi rebels. During the chat, officials outlined the attack plan, including the times at which US warplanes would take off to strike targets in Yemen.
“Names of potential replacements have been circulating within the White House for weeks, but the plan to remove Waltz, possibly as early as this week, gained traction in recent days,” reports Politico, citing sources close to the White House. “One of the top choices” to replace Waltz “is Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who is leading negotiations with Russia, Iran, and Hamas in Gaza,” the American media outlet adds, based on information from sources familiar with the matter. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, when questioned by Politico, emphasized that they “will not respond to rumors from anonymous sources.”
