The Papal Foundation, known for supporting the initiatives of the Holy Father in developing nations, has earmarked $10 million for relief projects previously designated by the Vatican. An additional $4 million will go towards urgent humanitarian assistance through the mission fund.
This support encompasses various initiatives such as providing access to clean water, building and renovating schools, restoring churches and seminaries, constructing healthcare facilities, and caring for elderly priests.
Edward (Ward) Fitzgerald III, the newly elected President of the Papal Foundation, expressed, “These investments are at the core of our mission to bring the love of Christ to those who need it most.” Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Jubilee Pilgrimage
Both Cardinal Dolan and Ward Fitzgerald III are currently participating in a pilgrimage to Rome connected to the Jubilee Year. Over 80 members of the Foundation, known as the Stewards of Saint Peter, along with their families, will pass through the Holy Doors of the four papal basilicas: St. Peter’s, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan quoted the Gospel of Matthew, stating, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” He emphasized the importance of serving the poor and vulnerable with faith and compassion in a world marked by increasing economic inequality.
Ward Fitzgerald III, in an interview with Vatican News, emphasized the foundation’s commitment to serving the Successor of Saint Peter and supporting the Church where the needs are greatest.
He highlighted that this year’s fund allocation is a tribute to the compassionate legacy of Pope Francis, who had a special dedication to serving the poor. The President of the Papal Foundation emphasized that the Stewards of Saint Peter are honored to support the Holy Father’s vision and respond to urgent needs worldwide.
Support for Education
In addition to grants, the Papal Foundation allocates $800,000 annually in scholarships for over 100 priests, religious sisters, and seminarians. This support enables them to study in Rome as part of the Saint John Paul II Scholarship Program.
Sr. Viviane Wela Mazalo, who is completing her studies at the Pontifical Faculty of Educational Sciences Auxilium in Rome, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to study and serve the people with the knowledge she has gained.
Ward Fitzgerald III acknowledged the importance of supporting individuals pursuing advanced education in theology and philosophy, noting the impact these scholars have on the Church.
The Love of the Church in Action
David Savage, Executive Director of the Foundation, emphasized that each grant, scholarship, and act of support is a tangible manifestation of the Church’s love in action. He called for unity among laity, clergy, and Church leadership to strengthen the global Church and uplift its most vulnerable members.
Through this shared mission of faith, the Papal Foundation aims to bring Catholics from every diocese in the United States together to support the vision of the Holy Father and make a positive impact on the world.
