Donald Trump has admitted that peace between Russia and Ukraine may not be achievable. “Maybe it’s not possible,” he said in a television interview with NBC News. “There is a tremendous hatred, we are talking about a tremendous hatred between these two men (Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin) and between the generals. They have been fighting hard for three years,” explained the tycoon, who then declared that there are still “excellent chances of making it happen.”
In the same TV interview, Trump also stated that he does not know if he should respect the Constitution of the United States, the foundational legal document of the nation. “I don’t know,” the president replied when asked by “Meet the Press with Kristen Welker” host from NBC News if he believed he should respect the country’s supreme law, according to some excerpts from the interview that will air tonight. When specifically asked if American citizens, as well as non-citizens, deserve due process as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States, Trump responded, “I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know.”
According to interview previews, the tycoon also stated, “I am not seeking a third term.”
He also declared that he will not remove Jerome Powell from the position of Fed chairman before the end of his term, set for May 2026, calling the central banker a “totally rigid” person and reiterating calls to the Fed to lower interest rates.
Trump stated that Powell is not a fan of his, but he expects the Fed to lower interest rates at some point. “Well, he should lower them. And at some point, he will. He’d rather not because he’s not a fan of mine,” he said, claiming that Powell doesn’t like him because he considers him to be completely rigid and incapable. When asked if he would remove Powell before the end of his term as president in 2026, Trump firmly denied it, saying, “No, no, no… why would I do that? I can replace that person very soon.”
The US president also intends to extend the deadline for TikTok if there is still no agreement.
In the interview with NBC News, Trump refused to rule out the possibility of making some tariffs permanent. “No, I wouldn’t, because if someone thought they would be taken off the table, why would they build in the United States?” he said. As for Beijing, he admitted to being “very tough on China,” effectively halting trade between the two major world economies, but he stated that the Dragon now wants to reach an agreement. “We just stopped,” he said. “That means we’re not losing a trillion dollars… because we’re not doing business with them right now. And they want to make a deal. They really do. We’ll see how it turns out, but it has to be a fair deal.”
