Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, shared insights from the gathering, which saw the participation of 173 Cardinals, including 130 Cardinal electors. The day began with a moment of prayer at 9am, followed by 26 interventions covering a wide range of topics.
Discussions revolved around crucial reforms initiated by Pope Francis, such as addressing issues related to legislation on abuse, economic matters, the Roman Curia, synodality, peace efforts, and environmental conservation. The theme of communion underscored the need for the new Pope to embody qualities of a Pontifex, a bridgebuilder, a compassionate shepherd, and a beacon of hope in a world plagued by division and conflict.
Key topics included Canon Law, the power of the Pope, the role of cardinals in the Church, Christian initiation, the persecution of religious minorities, and the pressing concern of climate change. The meeting also touched upon the date of Easter, the Council of Nicaea, and the importance of ecumenical dialogue.
Bruni announced that the Ring of the Fisherman was rendered void, and a call for peace was extended to conflicting parties. The General Congregation concluded at 12:30pm, with no further meetings scheduled.
