Welcome to a Reflection on Servant Leadership as the Conclave Approaches
By Paolo Ruffini
Extra omnes. All out.
As the world eagerly awaits the selection of the 267th Bishop of Rome, the concept of servant leadership comes to mind. How can a servant be the head of a people, of a Church? This question challenges our understanding, echoing the words of Jesus, “whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant” (Mk 10:42-45).
Today, as the cardinals prepare to enter the Sistine Chapel for the conclave, they are called to leave everything outside, surrendering to the mystery of Peter’s leadership. Peter, the fisherman whom Jesus entrusted with the Church, remains a symbol of strength in the face of adversity.
His story, filled with forgiveness and love, serves as a beacon for all who seek to lead with humility and grace. Peter’s tears of repentance mirror the fragility and power that define his leadership, confirming us all in faith.
As we await the outcome of the conclave, let us reflect on the legacy of Peter and the essence of servant leadership that continues to guide the Church through turbulent times.
