The Conclave Begins
The heavily secured St. Peter’s Square witnessed the cardinals entering the Sistine Chapel just before 5 pm to take their oath. The Extra omnes command signaled the start of the election process, prompting applause from the crowd watching on large screens in the square. As the doors closed, the Conclave proceedings commenced, leading to the black smoke at 9:01 pm.
After the vote, the electors retire to the official residence of Casa Santa Marta within the Vatican City, where Pope Francis resided during his pontificate. The cardinals not accommodated there are housed in the adjacent building, known as Santa Marta vecchia.
