Welcome to the exciting world of the Conclave! The first day concluded with a dramatic black smoke signaling that the 133 cardinal electors could not reach a consensus on the new pope. A second day of voting is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, May 8th, with four rounds of voting expected. The anticipation is high as faithful believers gathered around St. Peter’s Square, hoping to witness the white smoke and hear the famous “Habemus papam” announcement.

The Conclave Begins
The heavily secured St. Peter’s Square witnessed the cardinals entering the Sistine Chapel just before 5 pm to take their oath. The Extra omnes command signaled the start of the election process, prompting applause from the crowd watching on large screens in the square. As the doors closed, the Conclave proceedings commenced, leading to the black smoke at 9:01 pm.
After the vote, the electors retire to the official residence of Casa Santa Marta within the Vatican City, where Pope Francis resided during his pontificate. The cardinals not accommodated there are housed in the adjacent building, known as Santa Marta vecchia.

Security Measures
The Conclave triggered stringent security measures akin to those seen during Pope Francis’ funeral. With a focus on readiness, Rome’s prefect, Lamberto Giannini, emphasized the need for vigilance from the start of the voting process.

St. Peter’s Square is under high surveillance with drone defenses and adaptable security measures. The area is cordoned off, extending to surrounding streets and basilicas, especially Santa Maria Maggiore, where Pope Francis is entombed.
As the anticipation for the white smoke grows, over 4,000 officers are deployed to manage the estimated 250,000 attendees expected at St. Peter’s Square. Additionally, around 1,000 volunteers will assist in public areas during this historic event.
