However, unlike his predecessor, the 69-year-old Robert Francis Prevost hails from the northern part of the continent, with a rich missionary background in Peru before his election as the head of the Augustinians for two consecutive terms.
Early Life and Education
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Francis Prevost is the son of Louis Marius Prevost, of French and Italian descent, and Mildred MartÃnez, of Spanish descent. He pursued his studies at the Minor Seminary of the Augustinian Fathers and Villanova University in Pennsylvania, earning a degree in Mathematics in 1977, along with studies in Philosophy.
After entering the Order of Saint Augustine in 1977, he continued his theological education in Rome, where he was ordained a priest in 1982. He furthered his studies in Canon Law and eventually served as a missionary in Peru.
Missionary Work and Leadership Roles
During his time in Peru, Prevost served in various capacities, including as a prior of the community, formation director, and professor of Canon Law. His dedication and leadership led to his appointment as the Bishop of Chiclayo in 2015.
