It was a moment of divine intervention as I found myself in the prayer space surrounding the outdoor altar of the Parish of St. James the Apostle in Medjugorje. The atmosphere was filled with thousands of pilgrims gathered beneath the white statue of the Queen of Peace and the bronze statue of the Risen Christ. Suddenly, a powerful ringing of bells echoed for more than five minutes during the open-air Mass, creating a sense of awe and wonder among the crowd.
I was part of a small group of Spanish pilgrims, brought together by some dear friends, experiencing our first Eucharist in this unique Central European sanctuary known for its devotion to the Virgin Mary. The unity of prayer that brings millions of pilgrims from around the world to this sacred place each year was palpable.
As the priests behind the altar stood up without a word, the crowd erupted in applause at the announcement of the great news. The excitement was palpable as we whispered to each other, “HABEMUS PAPAM!” Who would it be? The sun broke through the clouds, casting a warm glow over the crowd, and the gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the trees, adding to the sense of joy and anticipation in the air.
After the Mass concluded, a sense of serenity filled the Holy Hour. The beauty of adoration and silence moved us deeply, with chants that seemed to touch the depths of our souls, bringing tears of healing and renewal.
Next to us, a young Mexican couple shared their smartphone with us, allowing us to follow the live images from St. Peter’s Basilica. Suddenly, a kind and serene man appeared on the central balcony in traditional papal attire, greeted by cheers from the crowd in St. Peter’s Square.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now Leo XIV, greeted the crowd with the words, “Peace be with you all!” His message of peace resonated deeply, calling for harmony in a world torn apart by war and division.
The election of Leo XIV as the new Vicar of Christ is a testament to the transcendent nature of the Church and the workings of the Holy Spirit within her. As a mathematician with a missionary spirit, he brings hope, kindness, wisdom, strength, and temperance to a world in need of healing.
Welcoming the Pontiff of Peace to the mountainous land of the Virgin, Queen of Peace, has been a true blessing.
Welcome to Medjugorje, Leo XIV.
Welcome, dear Pope, successor of Peter, bearer of God’s infinite love and peace.
