In the relationship and education of young people, there are still “obstacles to overcome” today. This was stated by Pope Leo XIV during an audience with the Brothers of the Christian Schools. “Think about the isolation caused by rampant relational models increasingly characterized by superficiality, individualism, and emotional instability; the spread of weakened thought patterns due to relativism; the prevalence of rhythms and lifestyles where there is not enough room for listening, reflection, and dialogue, at school, at home, sometimes among peers, with the resulting loneliness,” said Pope Leo.
Youth can do “wonderful things” but they need help. This was stated by the Pope in the audience with the Brothers of the Christian Schools. “What are the most urgent challenges to face in the youth world today? What are the values to promote? What are the resources to rely on? The young people of our time, like those of every era, are a volcano of life – emphasized Leo XIV – of energies, feelings, ideas. This can be seen from the wonderful things they can do in many fields. However, they also need help to harmoniously grow such richness and to overcome what, even in a different way than in the past, can still hinder healthy development. For example, in the seventeenth century, when the Lasallian schools were founded for the poorest boys, the use of Latin was an insurmountable communication barrier for many, today there are other obstacles to overcome.
The world of education must experiment with “new languages, with which to continue touching the hearts of students.” This was stated by the Pope in the audience with the Brothers of the Christian Schools. “These are challenging challenges, but which we, like Saint John Baptist de La Salle, can also use as launch pads to explore paths, develop tools, and adopt new languages with which to continue touching the hearts of students, helping and encouraging them to courageously face – emphasized Leo XIV – every obstacle to give their best in life, according to God’s designs.” The Pope finally congratulated the network of Lasallians for the teacher training: “It is commendable, in this sense, the attention you place in your schools on teacher training and the creation of educational communities where teaching efforts are enriched by the contribution of all.”
