Anton Abu Akleh recently shared his thoughts with Vatican Media on his late sister, Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian Catholic journalist known as the “voice of the oppressed people of the Holy Land” who tragically lost her life three years ago.

By Joseph Tulloch and Roberto Cetera

Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American journalist renowned for her reporting from the West Bank, was fatally shot in the back of the head during an Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp three years ago. Despite the passage of time, no one has been held accountable for her murder.

Initially, Israel denied any involvement in her death, attributing it to a supposed accidental shooting by Palestinian militants. However, after four months, the IDF acknowledged that one of its soldiers was likely responsible, although they denied any deliberate intent to target the journalist.

The specifics of Israel’s inquiry into the incident remain undisclosed, and a US investigation proved inconclusive due to a lack of cooperation from Israeli authorities.

As a journalist with Al Jazeera and a devout Catholic, Shireen Abu Akleh was among the few female Palestinian journalists reporting from the West Bank. Her brother, Anton, described her as having “entered the hearts of the Palestinian people” and serving as a vital voice for the oppressed in the Holy Land.

In a recent interview with Roberto Cetera on the third anniversary of his sister’s passing, Anton emphasized the family’s refusal to accept an investigation solely conducted by Israeli officials. He maintained that the Israeli army deliberately targeted Shireen, emphasizing that they are accountable for her death.

Despite being adorned with a clearly marked ‘Press’ bulletproof vest at the time of her killing, no concrete evidence or investigation has been provided by the Israeli authorities to date, according to Anton.

Shireen, a Palestinian by birth and a naturalized US citizen, is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the US Department of Justice, which her family hopes will identify and bring to justice those responsible for her untimely demise.

Anton expressed frustration at the prolonged investigation, stating, “It’s three years now. It’s taking too long.”

    200 journalists dead

In a chilling statistic, over 200 journalists have lost their lives in the pursuit of truth and justice, highlighting the grave risks faced by media professionals worldwide in their commitment to reporting the facts.
