Cardinal Oswald Gracias Calls for Peace in Kashmir
Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop Emeritus of Bombay, is urging for enduring peace between India and Pakistan amidst the ongoing tensions over the Kashmir region.
Following a recent ceasefire agreement between the two nations, Cardinal Gracias is calling on both sides to work towards a comprehensive and lasting resolution.
The escalation of tensions was sparked by a terrorist attack in Kashmir on April 22, resulting in the deaths of 26 civilians. After four days of retaliatory attacks, a ceasefire was finally reached on May 10.
Pope Leo XIV welcomed the ceasefire the next day, expressing hope for a lasting peace agreement. Cardinal Oswald Gracias echoed the Pope’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for peace in the region.
In a statement to the Vatican’s Fides news agency, Cardinal Gracias stated, “It is time to put an end to ancient resentments and work towards a peaceful resolution in Kashmir. A comprehensive agreement is crucial not only for India and Pakistan but for global peace.”
Highlighting the shared heritage between India and Pakistan, Cardinal Gracias emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving the Kashmir conflict. He warned against the potential consequences of a prolonged conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations, calling for international mediation and diplomatic efforts.
As he concluded, Cardinal Gracias urged leaders to prioritize peace over religious nationalism and work towards a realistic solution for the benefit of all involved.
