In a recent address at the Vatican during the General Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the significant role these societies play in the Church’s mission of evangelization.
He urged the National Directors to prioritize visiting dioceses, parishes, and communities to help the faithful recognize the vital importance of missions and support their brothers and sisters in areas where the Church is still growing.
The Holy Father, speaking in English, expressed his personal gratitude for the dedicated service of those representing over 120 countries, highlighting the essential work they do for the Church worldwide.
A Mission of Awakening
Pope Leo XIV underscored that the Pontifical Mission Societies are indeed the primary means of awakening missionary responsibility among all believers and providing support to developing ecclesial communities.
He lauded the Society for the Propagation of the Faith for its aid in pastoral and catechetical programs, building churches, healthcare, and educational initiatives in mission territories. Additionally, he praised the Society of the Holy Childhood for its focus on children’s Christian formation and well-being.
The Pope also recognized the Society of Saint Peter the Apostle and the Missionary Union for their contributions to cultivating missionary vocations and forming priests and religious individuals for the Church’s missionary work.
A Call to Missionary Discipleship
Highlighting the urgent need to share the Gospel message of God’s love with a world marred by war, violence, and injustice, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the Church’s role as a missionary entity that spreads peace and reconciliation.
