On May 25, 2025, history was made in the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV, as a series of events unfolded that solidified his connection with the faith and the city of Rome. From a heartfelt tribute by the citizens of Rome to his inauguration at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, and a prayerful pilgrimage to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, this day held immense significance for both the Pope and the people of Rome.

A Symbolic Tribute from the City: “For You and with You, I am Roman”

The day commenced with a poignant tribute from the city of Rome to Pope Leo XIV, symbolizing the unity between the Pontiff and the citizens. In a moving ceremony at the Campidoglio, Mayor Roberto Gualtieri welcomed the Pope with open arms. In a speech filled with emotion, Pope Leo XIV declared, “For you and with you, I am Roman,” highlighting his dedication to the city and its people.

The tribute also emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Church and civil authorities, especially with the upcoming Jubilee. The Pope called for solidarity and care for the less fortunate, emphasizing the need for active charity and service as a manifestation of faith. The atmosphere was one of joy and hope, as the Romans expressed their support and hopes for their new Bishop.

The Inauguration at St. John Lateran: A Commitment to Service

Following the tribute, Pope Leo XIV proceeded to the Basilica of St. John Lateran for his official installation as Bishop of Rome. The solemn Eucharistic celebration marked the beginning of his pastoral ministry in the Eternal City, signifying a new chapter for the Church.

In his inspiring homily, the Pope reiterated his commitment to service, echoing the words of St. Augustine, “A Christian with you and a bishop for you.” He emphasized the importance of prayer and personal conversion in building ecclesial communion, offering himself fully to the service of the People of God.

A Prayerful Visit to St. Mary Major: Entrusting the Ministry to Mary

The day culminated with a visit to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where Pope Leo XIV prayed before the icon of the Salus Populi Romani. He entrusted his ministry to the Virgin Mary, seeking her blessings for the Church and the world.

The Pope also paid homage to his predecessor, Pope Francis, at his tomb, symbolizing continuity and filial devotion. From the Basilica’s loggia, he called for unity and synodality among the faithful, emphasizing the importance of walking together as one family of God.

This historic day not only marked the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate but also set the tone for a ministry centered on prayer, communion, and service to the flock. It was a day that strengthened the bond between the Pope, the city of Rome, and the rich ecclesial tradition.
