President Sergio Mattarella to visit Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican on June 6.
The first in-person greeting between the Pope and Sergio Mattarella took place on May 18, when Leo XIV presided over the mass for the beginning of his pontificate. The President of the Republic, leading the Italian delegation present at the mass in St. Peter’s Square, had the opportunity to exchange a few words with the new Pontiff. Now, on June 6, Mattarella will return to the Vatican for an official visit, as announced today, May 31, by the Quirinale.
On the day of Leo XIV’s election, the President of the Republic – as recalled by Vatican News – expressed “warm wishes,” emphasizing the value of peace invoked by the Pope as he appeared for the first time from the Basilica’s Loggia. “In this historical moment, when so much of the world is devastated by inhumane conflicts where it is mainly the innocent who suffer the harshest consequences of such barbarity, I wish to assure you – wrote Mattarella in his message – of the commitment of the Italian Republic to always pursue solid relations with the Holy See to continue promoting a vision of the world and coexistence among peoples based on peace, the guarantee of inviolable rights and dignity, and freedom for all individuals.”
