The Fatherhood of the Apostle Peter
As the world awaits the Conclave to elect the new Successor of the Apostle Peter, it is important to reflect on the essence of the papacy, particularly the aspect of fatherhood. The role of the Bishop of Rome as a father figure is deeply felt by millions of people, who often feel orphaned in the absence of their spiritual father.
In a conversation with philosopher Jean Guitton after a momentous visit to India in 1964, Pope St. Paul VI shared his thoughts on fatherhood. He spoke of the incredible experience of being embraced by over a million people from all walks of life, a moment that left a lasting impact on him. Pope Paul VI remarked that of all the dignities of a Pope, fatherhood was the most enviable. He spoke of the feeling of fatherhood as a constant presence, a feeling that never wanes but only grows as the number of “children” increases.
The Pope expressed, “I feel like the father of all humanity… This feeling, in the Pope’s conscience, is always new, always fresh, always in a state of birth, always free and creative.” He described the act of blessing as a source of strength and vitality, a duty that he would never grow tired of performing.
Reflecting on his experiences in India and the Holy Land, Pope Paul VI emphasized the humility and brotherhood that comes with the papal office. Despite being surrounded by immense crowds and overwhelmed by their presence, he felt a sense of kinship and solidarity with the people. He dreamt of a Pope who lived free from the trappings of power and protocol, finding true happiness in the simplicity of his role as a shepherd among his flock.
As we approach the Conclave, let us remember the words of Pope St. Paul VI and the example of the Apostle Peter, the first Pope, who embodied the essence of fatherhood in his ministry. May the new Successor of Peter continue to carry the burden of all with humility and love, embracing the role of a father to all humanity.
