The Laudato Si Movement: Celebrating 10 Years of Caring for Our Common Home
The Archdiocese of Nampula, located in the picturesque northern region of Mozambique, is buzzing with excitement as it celebrates the 10th anniversary of the groundbreaking encyclical Laudato Si, released in 2015 by the revered Pope Francis. This milestone is being marked with a series of engaging activities designed to raise awareness among the local population about the urgent need to care for our beloved planet Earth, our Common Home.
Under the inspiring leadership of the Laudato Si Movement, which has been steadily gaining momentum in the Province of Nampula, a range of impactful initiatives have been rolled out. These include reflective meetings, tree planting drives, educational campaigns, and serene prayer moments – all of which revolve around the profound message of interconnectedness that lies at the heart of the encyclical: “Everything is connected.”
Embracing Interconnectedness
At a recent reflection meeting held in the Archdiocese of Nampula, at the tranquil Parish of São Pedro de Napipine, attendees were reminded of the significance of the encyclical’s anniversary. Mr. Rafael Pedro, the provincial coordinator of Laudato Si, emphasized that this commemoration goes beyond a mere annual event – it is a call to transform mindsets and foster a deep connection with creation.
“We must shift our perspective and recognize that we are not separate from nature; rather, we are an integral part of it. Plants, animals, waters, and mountains are our siblings, for we share the same divine Creator,” shared Rafael Pedro passionately.

Weathering the Storms: Nampula’s Battle with Cyclones
In the face of environmental challenges, the provincial government of Nampula, represented by the esteemed Secretary of State, Mr. Plácido Pereira, has pledged to ramp up environmental education efforts in the region. Mr. Pereira, during a symbolic tree-planting ceremony on the parish grounds, underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation.
“Our Earth is our shared Home. Neglecting its well-being leads to dire consequences. The devastating cyclones that have ravaged Nampula in recent years have exacerbated poverty. It is imperative that we act responsibly and promptly,” emphasized Mr. Pereira.
Upholding Environmental Integrity
Mr. Pereira also emphasized the crucial role of businesses in preserving the environment, stressing the importance of strict adherence to environmental laws and regulations.
“Every company must conduct thorough environmental impact assessments and strictly adhere to established norms. Development should never come at the cost of environmental degradation,” concluded Mr. Pereira, echoing the urgent need for collective action in safeguarding our planet.
