Brescia sperimenta car sharing con guida autonoma

A groundbreaking initiative has been launched in Brescia, Italy, marking the debut of Europe’s first autonomous car sharing service. This innovative project, a collaboration between A2a and Politecnico di Milano, envisions a future of urban mobility where self-driving vehicles offer convenience and sustainability to city dwellers.

The autonomous car, a Fiat 500 electric model, is capable of reaching customers on its own, allowing them to drive to their destination before autonomously returning to a parking spot, charging station, or picking up a new user. This pilot program, sanctioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Municipality of Brescia under the ‘Smart Road’ decree, aims to address traffic congestion and promote decarbonization.

Throughout the testing phase, which will continue until the end of November 2025, the autonomous vehicles will navigate various routes within Brescia, including the city center and surrounding neighborhoods. Each test will be closely supervised by a trained operator onboard the vehicle, ready to intervene if necessary, and monitored in real-time from a dedicated control room at the A2a headquarters.

Renato Mazzoncini, CEO of A2a, expressed optimism about the project’s potential impact on urban mobility, emphasizing the benefits of autonomous driving combined with car sharing in enhancing efficiency, traffic flow, safety, and sustainability. As urban areas are home to a significant portion of the population, innovative solutions like this one play a crucial role in achieving climate neutrality.

The Mayor of Brescia, Laura Castelletti, praised the city’s role as a pioneer in sustainable innovation, highlighting how this project positions Brescia as a European model for future urban mobility. The collaboration between A2a, Politecnico di Milano, and Most reflects a multidisciplinary approach to tackling mobility challenges and accelerating positive change.
