    Italy observes Holocaust Remembrance Day

Italy Commemorates the Holocaust’s 80th Anniversary After Auschwitz Liberation

Italy will observe Holocaust Remembrance Day on Monday, marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, with a series of events and ceremonies.

President Sergio Mattarella will attend a ceremony at Auschwitz alongside world leaders and Holocaust survivors, followed by ceremonies in Rome on Tuesday for Giorno della Memoria.

Italy’s culture ministry is organizing a series of initiatives at state archives, libraries, and museums to honor Holocaust Remembrance Day.

    Rome

Rome is hosting around 40 events as part of the Memoria genera Futuro program, commemorating Holocaust victims with a focus on involving schools and youth.

The city has also unveiled a campaign featuring a mural outside the Casina dei Vallati in the Jewish Ghetto depicting Italian Holocaust survivors Liliana Segre and Sami Modiano.

Entitled Anti-Semitism, History Repeating, the mural by artist aleXsandro Palombo was relocated to Rome after being vandalized in Milan.

    Stolpersteine Memorials

Rome has added 25 new Holocaust memorial cobblestones, known as stolpersteine, around the city, honoring victims deported to Auschwitz or killed in Rome.

    Milan

Milan is installing 26 new stolpersteine in memory of victims, with a focus on Emilia Amalia Levi, a young girl mentioned in Primo Levi’s memoir.

The city is also hosting various events under the Milan is Memory program, including a digital map showing Milan’s Jewish population in 1938.

This year’s Giorno della Memoria in Milan is overshadowed by a boycott from the city’s Jewish community following a dispute with an Italian partisan association.

    Liliana Segre

Central to Milan’s commemorations is Binario 21, a Holocaust memorial at the city’s main train station, where many Italian Jews were deported to Nazi death camps.

Liliana Segre, one of the few Italian Jewish children to survive a Nazi death camp, was deported to Auschwitz at age 13 and now lives in Milan.

    Pope Francis

Pope Francis highlighted the “scourge of anti-Semitism” during his Angeles prayer, emphasizing the importance of remembering the Holocaust and honoring its victims.

    Holocaust Remembrance Day

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, established by the UN, commemorates the liberation of Auschwitz survivors in 1945 and honors the millions who suffered persecution and genocide.
