The Crisis in Bukavu: Abandoned to Hunger and Neglect
In the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo lies Bukavu, the capital of the South Kivu province. Today, this once vibrant city is grappling with a humanitarian emergency, where children face increasing violations, essential services have collapsed, and the population is left with no way out.
According to a missionary from the city, who wishes to remain anonymous for security reasons, Bukavu is being abandoned to neglect and hunger. The city, under the control of the M23 militia since February 16, is in a state of limbo, where services are scarce, and insecurity prevails.
With the M23 imposing new taxes on local businesses, including levies on mining and traders, economic hardships have worsened, leading to closures of banks, schools, and businesses in Bukavu.
A Growing Crisis
Over 850,000 people, half of whom are children, have been displaced, facing limited access to basic necessities like clean water, healthcare, and education. Violations against children have surged by 150% since the beginning of the year, painting a grim picture of the situation in Bukavu.
A Struggle for Survival
The region is also dealing with the aftermath of severe flooding, ongoing conflict, and damaged infrastructure, making it difficult to provide aid to those in need. International businesses have suspended operations due to tax disputes, further complicating the situation for the population.
Despite the challenges, the people of Bukavu cling to their faith, seeking solace in their beliefs. The missionary notes that while they find refuge in churches, they see no way out from a human perspective.
As we witness the unfolding crisis in Bukavu, it becomes clear that urgent action is needed to address the growing instability and provide support to those affected by neglect, hunger, and violence.
Let us stand in solidarity with the people of Bukavu, offering hope and assistance in their time of need.
