    In Italia, più di 100.000 bambini e adolescenti sotto i 17 anni soffrono di obesità grave e precoce, una condizione particolarmente pericolosa che può portare a una riduzione dell’aspettativa di vita di oltre 15 anni rispetto ai loro coetanei. Va di pari passo, infatti, a rischi molto seri che possono verificarsi molto in anticipo, e già in età evolutiva, come ipertensione, diabete tipo 2, dislipidemia e fegato grasso ma anche ansia, isolamento sociale, bassa autostima.

    Questo l’allarme che arriva dalla Società italiana di pediatria riunita a Napoli in occasione dell’80/mo congresso. Si parla di obesità grave quando l’indice di massa corporea supera il 99° percentile, ma l’indicatore di rischio più semplice da osservare è il rapporto vita/statura: se la circonferenza della vita supera la metà dell’altezza, è già un segnale.

    Secondo i dati dell’Istituto Superiore di Sanità riguarda almeno il 2,6% dei bambini di 8-9 anni. Un dato che preoccupa, spiega Claudio Maffeis, professore ordinario di Pediatria all’Università di Verona: “Per evitare che un sovrappeso si trasformi in una malattia cronica bisogna riconoscere e trattare tempestivamente questa condizione, troppo spesso sottovalutata”. Secondo uno studio illustrato al congresso della Sip, i programmi intensivi sullo stile di vita riescono a ridurre l’indice di massa grassa in oltre il 50% dei bambini tra i 6 e i 9 anni. Ma hanno effetti quasi nulli negli adolescenti: solo il 2% dei ragazzi tra i 14 e i 16 anni risponde positivamente. “L’età fa la differenza. Se interveniamo presto possiamo cambiare le traiettorie di salute – sottolinea Rino Agostiniani, presidente della Società Italiana di Pediatria -. La prevenzione precoce è la chiave.” Quanto alle terapie, accanto a dieta e movimento fisico, sono disponibili, ma solo per gli adolescenti dai 12 anni in su, i farmaci agonisti del recettore GLP1. “Aiutano a regolare il senso di fame e sazietà e si sono dimostrati efficaci nel ridurre peso e fattori di rischio cardiometabolico – conclude Maffeis -. Ma vanno prescritti solo in centri specializzati”.
