Exciting news emerged on Saturday, June 22 as Pope Francis announced the appointment of Giuseppe Yang Yongqiang as the new bishop of Hangzhou, moving him from Zhoucun in East China’s Shandong province. This appointment aligns with the Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China, showcasing the ongoing dialogue between the two entities. Bishop Yongqiang had previously taken part in the Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, further demonstrating his deep commitment to his faith and his community.

Giuseppe Yang Yongqiang, a dedicated member of the Catholic community, has been chosen to lead Hangzhou, the vibrant capital of Zhejiang province in China. The Holy See Press Office shared a statement last Saturday, June 22, announcing his appointment and the upcoming installation ceremony on Thursday, June 27 at Hangzhou Cathedral. This significant event will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the spiritual journey of the local Catholic community.

Born on April 11, 1970, in Boxing (Shandong), Giuseppe Yang Yongqiang comes from a devout Catholic family. His journey into priesthood began in 1987 when he joined the Holy Spirit Seminary in Jinan. After years of dedicated study and service, he was ordained a priest on June 15, 1995. Over the years, he has served his community with passion and dedication, earning the respect of many.

During the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in October 2023, Bishop Yongqiang, alongside Bishop Antonio Yao Shen of the Diocese of Jining/Wumeng, had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions on the theme “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission.” This experience was described as an “honour” by Bishop Yang, emphasizing the importance of sharing faith and listening to the stories of others.

Bishop Yang also reflected on his personal journey and the impact of his upbringing on his vocation. His dedication to the Catholic faith was deeply influenced by his family, especially his grandmother, who instilled in him a love for prayer and devotion early on. His spiritual journey is a testament to the power of faith and the unwavering support of his loved ones.

As Bishop Yang assumes his new role in Hangzhou, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to serving the Catholic community. With the support of his congregation, he aims to make a positive impact and foster a sense of unity among believers in the region.

The appointment of Giuseppe Yang Yongqiang as the new bishop of Hangzhou marks a significant moment for the Catholic community in China, signaling a new chapter of growth and spiritual development under his leadership.
