Building a Brighter Future for Myanmar’s Youth: The Canossian Sisters’ Mission
Amidst the civil conflict that has engulfed Myanmar following the military junta’s seizure of power in 2021, the Canossian Sisters have been working tirelessly to provide hope and education for the country’s youth. With a strong presence in Singapore, the Canossian Daughters of Charity have been making a difference in Myanmar for decades.
Canossian Sister Janet Wang sheds light on the congregation’s impactful work in Myanmar, detailing their efforts to train future teachers and empower young women for careers in the hospitality industry.
The Journey Begins
It all started in 1996 when the Canossian Sisters from Singapore responded to a call for help from the late Burmese Archbishop Matthias U Shwe. Their mission was to educate the youth of Myanmar and support the formation of young evangelizers. Over the years, they organized leadership camps, English lessons, and Bible courses, fostering integral development in the communities they served.
By 2008, the Canossians had established their first center in Myanmar, dedicated to training educators under the motto “Serve With Love.” This initiative aimed to equip individuals to become teachers and caregivers for children who lacked access to formal education.
Since its inception, the center has trained over 350 young women, many of whom have returned to serve their communities in Myanmar. The Canossians have also opened a preschool and a center focusing on hospitality training near Inle Lake, providing valuable skills for employment in the tourism industry.
Urgent Needs and Ongoing Support
Amidst the economic challenges facing Myanmar, the Canossian Sisters have launched initiatives such as the “Food for the Poor Project” to address food insecurity. They continue to provide English language classes and distribute essential supplies to support struggling families.
In times of crisis, the Sisters extend a helping hand to remote communities, offering not just material aid but also spiritual and emotional support. The goal is to spread God’s love and compassion during these difficult times.
Sustaining Hope Amidst Adversity
Despite travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the political unrest in Myanmar, the Canossian Sisters remain committed to their mission. Through virtual meetings and Zoom calls, they stay connected with volunteers and communities in Myanmar and Singapore, united in prayer for peace and harmony.
As Sr. Wang emphasizes, what Myanmar needs most now is peace. The Canossian Sisters continue to inspire hope, empower individuals, and sow seeds of positivity in the midst of adversity.
